Do Not Accept Period Pain and Discomfort

Within Chinese Medicine, there is the notion of an “ideal menstrual period”. It should be regular every 26-30 days, last 5-6 days, and not be too heavy or too light. It should be painless, and there should be minimal symptoms before, during and after.

The symptoms women often experience are pain, flooding, irritability, tears, insomnia, constipation, headache and skin breakouts. Period cramping and pain should not be accepted as normal.

Our goal is to help you identify factors negatively impacting your hormonal health and to provide you with a treatment plan designed from an integrated health perspective, working with you to balance your body and promote your health and wellness.

Acupuncture for Period Support

Your menstrual cycle is a monthly health compass. When period symptoms like cramping, low back ache, menstrual bloating, mood changes, headaches, or heavy flow start to take over, it’s your body asking for support.

At Balance Acupuncture Brisbane, in Carina, a step from Carindale, I use gentle, targeted acupuncture for period pain and Traditional Chinese Medicine to help smooth your cycle, ease discomfort, and support steadier hormones—so each month feels more manageable.

What I commonly help with

  • Painful periods and PMS/PMDD: cramping, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, fatigue
  • Irregular timing or skipped cycles: tailored irregular menstrual cycle treatment and treatment for irregular periods
  • Heavy or scanty bleeding, spotting, cyclical migraines
  • Endometriosis-related flares and PCOS cycle irregularity (as part of a broader medical plan)
  • Post‑pill cycle regulation and support after stress or illness
  • Menstrual cramps but no period (assessment and care, with referral if needed)

How acupuncture may help

From a Chinese medicine perspective, difficult periods often reflect disruptions in the smooth flow of qi and blood, or patterns like cold, heat, or damp. With carefully chosen points, acupuncture aims to:

  • Reduce cramping by easing pelvic and uterine muscle tension
  • Improve circulation to relieve stagnation and menstrual bloating
  • Calm the stress response to steady mood and sleep
  • Support more predictable cycles over several months

Many clients choose acupuncture as natural pain relief for period pain. In modern terms, acupuncture can influence the nervous system, circulation, and local inflammatory pathways. While results vary, people frequently report less pain, lighter tension, and clearer cycles after a short course of care.

When cramps occur without bleeding

If you’re experiencing menstrual cramps but no period, we’ll look closely at timing, stress, travel, training load, recent illness, and contraception. I’ll also recommend appropriate medical checks to rule out other causes.

Acupuncture can help settle pelvic tension and stress while you investigate the root cause with your GP or specialist.

Your treatment plan

  • Comprehensive consult:
We’ll review your symptoms, cycle history, contraception/medications, stress, sleep, and nutrition. Tongue and pulse findings guide a personalised plan.
  • Cycle‑aligned care:
For period pain, we often begin the week before bleeding starts and continue into the first day or two if cramps are strong. For regulation, weekly sessions across 1–3 cycles are common, then we taper.
  • Gentle techniques:
Ultra‑fine needles with a calm, comfortable approach. I may add moxa (warming therapy), cupping for back/shoulder tension, and simple at‑home acupressure. Chinese herbal guidance may be offered when appropriate.
  • Track progress:
We’ll measure changes in pain scores, timing, flow, PMS mood/sleep, and energy so improvements are clear and meaningful.

Self‑care between sessions

  • Warmth over the lower abdomen or back
  • Gentle movement (walking, stretching, restorative yoga)
  • Regular meals with protein and minerals to steady energy
  • Mindful caffeine/alcohol in the late luteal phase
  • Simple wind‑down routine for deeper sleep

Safety and referrals

Please seek prompt medical advice for very heavy bleeding (soaking protection hourly), sudden severe pain, fever, fainting, new pain after IUD insertion, or persistent menstrual cramps but no period. I’m happy to collaborate with your GP, gynaecologist, or fertility specialist to ensure comprehensive care.
